Resources Empowering Action for Community Health (REACH) was formed in 2015 in order to bridge the gap between Lewis-Clark State College and Lewiston community. Our mission is to promote healthy lifestyles of emerging young adults, support their physical and behavioral health needs, and to facilitate the reduction of harm associated with detrimental life choices, including alcohol/substance use and abuse. We work to provide information, education and sober activities to our community to enhance health and wise choices. Any concerned student, parent, professional or community member can participate in this community health related coalition.
Education and Outreach
We work to provide information, education and sober activities to our community to enhance health and wise choices. Any concerned student, parent, professional or community member can participate in this community health related coalition. Idaho is currently being pressured to legalize marijuana.
The first video below speaks to the opiod crisis in the United States. According to Prescription Drug Abuse 2013 report, overdoses have doubled since 1999. 1 out of 5 high school students in Idaho have used a prescription drug without having a prescription. SAMHSA
believes every 45 hours we lose a life due to abuse of these drugs. Along with that comes heroin. US Attorney for Idaho states the amount of heroin seized by Idaho State Police jumped 800% between 2014-2015, Currently carfentanil is an issue and it is 10,000 times more potent than morphine. We have started a drug take back day as a diversion to keep some of the drugs out of the hands of our youth.
The second video below you will see a video called Chronic in which Colorado tells how the state and people have changed marijuana has been legal in their state. They now have five cartels in their state and all the ramifications that go with that. It talks about the chemicals used to get marijuana potency to 99% vs. 3% (which was common in the 1980's) and how those chemicals are penetrating into our water sources and soil and poisoning animals and making soil toxic. It tells about the crime rate, mental illness and state debt all increasing dramatically.
We promote and support healthy activities for our community . Recently we purchased a portable volleyball court that community members we can loan out for use in parks or private parties.

Helping The Community
Drug take back day is a diversion intervention to keep drugs out of the hands of our youth
An Idahoan dies every 39 hours from drugs. The drug induced death rate in Idaho has more than tripled since 2000 (Idaho Vital Statistics, 2013). By a students’ sophomore year in college, about half of their classmates will have been offered the opportunity to abuse a prescription drug.
REACH (Resources Empowering Action for Community Health) with support from the Lewiston Police Department has two Drug Take-back Days per year at Lewis-Clark State College. It is held in the library parking lot on the corner of 5th Street and 7th Avenue. The drop box will be located right by the library book drop for easy “drive-through” access.
We will accept prescription and over the counter medication, supplements, vitamins, and pet medications (expired or not) during this event. Not accepted will be: needles, syringes, inhalers, and liquids. Please remove or black-out personal information on the container but leave the medication information visible.

With the grant funds provided REACH will add lights to the basketball court on 11th street in addition to obtaining a portable light system and volleyball net. Our hope is that both students and community members will be able to utilize these resources for fun outdoor activities any time of day.
In addition to purchasing lights and a portable volleyball system the REACH team has begun a Rethink That Drink Campaign. The goal of the Rethink That Drink Campaign is to encourage students to rethink that drink for health and wellness and to provides safe drinking tips. Below are four posters created in order to inform students on the topic.
